Mazda 6 Headlights Don’t Work – Auto Repair Info.

Flash for pass was the only headlights working

A local technician I know had a problem with head lights only working in the “flash for pass” position on a 2003 Mazda 6. There were no running lights, no low beam or high beams. This was puzzling, at least the high beam bulbs were good and it wasn’t really possible for all the exterior lights to have bad bulbs. After checking all the usual things like the fuses in the passenger compartment fuse panel and the one under the hood and switching a few of the relays to see if anything would happen… nothing. The high beam indicator on the dash DID light up indicating that the switch was doing something and the switch felt normal; sometimes on cars if a switch feels funny, loose or worn that would be an indication of a problem.

Mazda 6 headlight module located to the right of steering column

Even after checking Google for free auto repair information like in Mazda forums that may have posted a similar problem… NOTHING. The next step was to check for TSB’s (Technical Service Bulletins) and to find a wiring diagram of the headlights and other exterior lights. Being a professional technician the shop provided access to Mitchell 1 so access to repair info. wasn’t a problem. There were no TSB’s related to headlights found. The wiring diagram printed from the Mitchell1 repair manual software, showed several things. What it revealed was, there is a control module for the headlights located under the dash beside the steering column.

The first thing that stuck out when looking at the wiring diagram was that the flash for pass does not go through a module like the rest of the exterior lights on this model. Remember the flash for pass was the only exterior lights working so this makes the module the most likely cause of the problem. After turning the headlight switch to the low beam “on” position, probing and checking the wire coming out of the module that was suppose to power the low beams – no power was found. Powering this wire up with a Power Probe, the headlights worked! This verified that everything downstream from the module like the relays and wiring was working. After replacing the module everything was working again… headlights running lights and all. Without the wiring diagram this would have taken a lot longer to diagnose. This was a 2003 Mazda 6 – other years or models may have an entirely different system, finding the specific auto repair manual info can make all the difference in the world. See our car repair manual page for access to specific diagrams and info. for your vehicle.

Is this headlight module only with HID lights cars?
Do you know a part number- I can’t seem to find one by the name you gave: “headlight module”
I have an 04 mazda 6, 2.3l , with only the middle smaller light working on both headlights. Changing the relay didn’t help- seems to be some voltage/signals before the relay are messed up somehow. Bulbs, etc. are fine.
I think my lights are just normal lights- they look like your picture. They don’t have the extra control module box behind the headlamps like I think the HIDs usually do.
    Thank you!

Jeff, the car in this repair blog did not have a HID. Sometimes the repair manual information and the dealer will call parts by different names. The best thing to to is get a wiring diagram for your specific model to help diagnose your issue. You can also take the wiring diagram to the parts department at the dealer to help show/explain what you are looking for. If you get a good parts guy at the dealer and the problem is somewhat common, he may know exactly what you need just by the symptom of the problem. Good Luck.

I went to the dealer yesterday and they couldn’t find anything matching this description for a part. They pulled up the wiring diagrams and couldn’t find anything. Of course they told me that they have never heard of this problem either…
Any chance you have a part number or better description of what the part actually is? I plan on working on mine this weekend.

John, providing you have the same issue and the same year as the car in the blog – look on the driver’s side above the pedals. Look for the module. If you find it, unplug the two plugs and remove it from the bracket. The numbers may be on it. Good Luck.

Intermittent problem with my 2007 Mazda6. When I turn the headlight switch to on, the headlights do not turn on, the wipers turn and the hazard lights are on solid (no flashing). This does not happen everytime. It is just happening more frequently lately. Any ideas?

Sounds like a short either in the wiring, the switch or control module. Electrical testing with electrical circuit knowledge and a wiring diagram is needed. Not really a DIY project. Good Luck.

My 2007 Mazda 6 left low beam works correctly with the ignition off, but is inoperative with the ignition on. (The right hand low beam works with ignition on or off.) The high beams, park lamps, turn signals also work correctly with the ignition on or off. Any ideas why the left side low beam only would not work with ignition On?

Possibly that circuit shorted in the module. Good Luck.

Hi everyone, same problem with my Mazda 5 2009
After work I tried to turn the lights on and nothing happen, I checked the high beams and the fog lights and they work properly, I replaced both low beam bulbs, checked the fuses left and right and everything seems to be ok, any possible solution for this issue will be much appreciated thanks

Ricardo, I’d get a wiring diagram and start back tracking to see where the power loss is. Good Luck.

I’ve stopped counting how many low beam headlights I’ve bought. They go out – passenger side then driver side shortly after. Twice they’ve gone out completely, which is where I’m at again. Tried changing the fuses – they are good. High beams work fine. I’m not much of a mechanic so it costs me $80 each time to have a light changed because they said they have to drop the bumper. Last time, 5 months ago, I had them change both bulbs even though only one had gone out. Now they’re both out again. 2006 Mazda 6 wagon. I guess I will have to check for this module under steering column…
