DenLorsTools.com Summary: Since 2005 at DenLorsTools.com and now our most recent tool website, WiseAutoTools.com, we’ve been answering questions on Ford spark plug thread repair kits. It always amazes us that there’s always new questions. A recent inquiry was regarding a 1998 Lincoln Navigator blown spark plug. I recommended the 5553 thread repair kit for the job. The Lincoln Navigator owner would prefer to use the less expensive Calvan 38900 kit and questioned why I made the recommendation that I did. Below is a copy of our correspondence.

I know sounds like it’s either a no brainer… or a sales pitch to make customers buy expensive thread repair kits. Well apparently it’s hard for some to understand that proper tools for the installation of Time Sert inserts are necessary. That’s the reason for this quick auto tool blog.
Maybe it’s the economy. But lately we have been inundated with customers that are really trying to save money. Hey there’s nothing wrong with being frugal or as I like to say “being conservative”. However this is a line that can be crossed. The problem with trying to skimp on tools and just trying to get the job done as cheaply as possible is that “sometimes the job is not a success“. A failed repair ends up costing more in the long run. It’s takes more time, it may damage components beyond repair, there’s more down time, the repair may not last or it may not work at all.

Summary: The AERA (Automotive Re-builders Association) reported that the Kent Moore EN-47702 Bolt Extractor Kit can be used to help remove broken head bolts in the block or broken main bolts which sometimes break in GM 2002-2006 2.8, 3.5, 4.2 aluminum block engines upon removal. Due to the dislike metals seizing can occur, which may cause enough binding that results in breakage of these fasteners. Kent Moore makes OE essential tools for GM, Chevrolet, Buick dealerships; they produce a tool kit that was designed for extraction when these bolts break. The specialty tool number is EN-47702.

The TIME-SERT 5553 spark plug thread repair kit is a Big Sert kit which is over sized (larger than standard kits). It is used primarily on the Ford 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8 Triton engines. Those engines have had a common issue with spark plugs blowing out. The kit can also be used on some other applications using taper seat spark plugs with M14 x1.25mm. The 5553 kit uses a 51549 part number which is larger on the outside diameter than many other competitive brands. Question – My sons car, 1998 Dodge Stratus 2.4 blew a spark plug and the threads stripped. The thread size in the head is 14×1.25. I’m guessing I need time sert kit #4412e because it is deep. Could you please let me know if that is the kit I will need. The thread depth on the spark plug is 3/4in. If I could get a cost for the kit, insert and oil for installation. Thank you..
