TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) systems are either direct or indirect. The 2005 Ford Expedition uses a direct tire pressure monitoring system. It has sensors that measure the exact tire pressure in each tire (this can also include the spare). The tire pressure sensors are incorporated into the metal valve stems on the Expedition, they transmit the tire pressure information to the ECU (Electronic Control Unit). TPM sensors have a battery that only last so long and will eventually fail over time like any other battery. TPM sensors are not serviceable, so when the battery goes bad the TPM sensor has to be replaced. If a tire is low and the TPM system is working properly, a warning will be displayed on the dash alerting the driver. The tire pressures should be checked as soon as possible to avoid damaging a tire beyond repair. Tire change mechanics must be careful when changing tires with TPM sensors because tire machines can easily damage a sensor. Fix a flat tire sealer or a similar product can also damage the sensors.
Indirect TPM systems do not have tire pressure sensors on each wheel, they use the vehicle’s ABS (Anti Lock Brake) wheel speed sensors to calculate the speed of each tire. The idea is that equally inflated tires will travel at the same speed. The computer detects the slight difference in speed of the under inflated tire and turns the warning on. It is also important to match tread depth and brand since variations in wheel speed can cause a false warning with this type of system.
Ford Expedition Tire Pressure Monitor Reset Procedure
- Start with the ignition switch turned OFF.
- Switch the ignition from OFF to RUN three times stopping in the RUN position.
- Press the brake pedal and release.
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Switch the ignition from OFF to run three more times stopping in the RUN position.
- The horn will beep once and the TPMS indicator on the dash will blink indicating the training mode has been entered.
- Quickly after the horn beeps, position the magnet on the left front tire – when the horn beeps it’s time to move to the next wheel.
- Repeat this process on the RF, RR and LR tires (spare if applicable).
- When the procedure is completed the horn will beep and the message center will say “Tire Training Mode Complete.

Currently we don’t have the magnet by “itself” – some of the TPM reset tools have one that comes in the kit. See the link below to view the kits we have.

Other round magnets work too though. The type of magnets that are sometimes found in transmision pans or on drop light holders may work in a pinch.

froze on metal cap to valve stems. can`t add air. broke one stem off cost $300.still can`t add air to other 3 tires

I would probably try a little heat from a hair dryer or heat gun. There could be corrosion from the aluminum. PB Blaster (penetrating oil) may help also.

Hey great advice. So If I buy the magnet and reset and “relearn” the sensors then the sensor fault messages will stop? how will I know if replacement is needed? Thanks

Jim, the reset procedure is the first thing to try. If one of the sensors is bad you’ll know when it does not make the horn beep. It could be more invloved if there are other issues, but that is the common scenario. Good Luck.

Shawn, not sure. You may want to refer to a repair manual or just try the procedure if you have a magnet already.

More than likely a faulty blower motor. I would check for voltage with a test light or meter. God Luck.

I used a magnet from magnetic tail light you put on a car when you tow it. Very inexpensive.
