Below is some of the set-up instructions for the Time Sert universal head bolt thread repair kit. The Time-Sert 2200 is used primarily on Toyotas although these tips can be used on other universal kits as well. Before you start a good practice is to always check the insert size to verify the correct size and thread pitch is being used. Remember that the head bolt will NOT thread completely into the insert until it has been installed all the way into the cylinder block with the installation driver. The use of the driver is what completes the threads at the bottom of the insert. When the threads are completed, the insert is locked in because the bottom is swedged outward, holding it in securely. A much better method than peening the top.
After it has been verified that the correct thread repair kit is being used; measure the depth of the hole with the metal rule that is provided in the kit. Measure from the top of the block down until the rule touches the top thread. Then use the sharpie permanent marker provided to mark the metal rule. Some engines may have two different depths of holes so it’s important to check EACH hole.
After each hole has been checked, use the measurement (or measurements) marked on the metal rule, plus the length of the “drill bushing”. Note that some drill bushings are different lengths. Now mark the core drill starting at the cutting edge up to the measurement including the top of the core bushing.
Then place the core drill, tap and driver level on the table so that all the tools are aligned equally at the bottom. Now use the sharpie to mark a line on the tap and driver by referencing the mark that was made on the core drill bit. Now put the stop collar on the core drill bit and secure by tightening the Allan screw.
1. Keep the chips out of the engine by using clear packing tape.
2. When chucking the drill, be sure to place the core drill bit deep enough into the 1/2″ drill so that the contact points in the chuck are past the square. This will help to insure that there is no wobble (or side to side run-out).
3. When getting ready to drill be sure to place the counter bore cutting edge (the step-up on the bit) past the drill bushing. If the cutting edge beginning at the step hits the bushing, it can dull the bit or possible even break it. If it is dull, obviously cutting will be more difficult. Therefore, it’s best to start to drill only after the larger portion of the cutting bit is through (or past) the drill bushing.
