Used Police Cars for Sale – Where to Find

2:34 pm Consumer

Local used car lot finds creative way to promote their biz with a used police car.

Summary: Used police cars are usually available at a low cost at some lower priced car lots, government auto auctions and public auto auctions. In most cases used police and sheriff deputy cars have been very well maintained. They typically come with some features that ordinary cars don’t come with. Read on to learn about the extras that come with a used cruiser.  One local Tampa car lot picked up a used Ford Crown Victoria police car at a dealer auction and had a great custom wrap installed. The rolling advertisement helps to promote their used car business in a unique way.

Used police cars are for sale all the time at bargain basement prices in practically all markets in the United States. In the past the custom effects were painted on which made it more involved and expensive to complete a face-lift. Most late model used police cars are white with vinyl wraps. The wraps can be taken off with a little patience and hard work. Finding a used police car isn’t really all that hard. Start by looking at the local classifieds. Craigslist and eBay are other sources that may help turn up a winner in your search that for a golden nugget.

Police cars usually have larger capacity radiators for cooling their engines when sitting at idle for long periods of time. An interesting note with 2006 and up Chevy Impala’s is that the police version was NOT equipped with a 303 horsepower v-8! They instead used the 3.9 with an SS radiator rather than designing a larger one that would handle extreme conditions. The transmissions usually have an auxiliary cooler to keep extreme temperatures under control for the long hours these cars stay running throughout the course the day. To allow the engines to remain running to power the equipment in the car, many police cars are equipped with a feature that allows the ignition key to me removed. The system is called “run lock.” The ignition key can be taken out and the engine stays running. This is to prevent the all embarrassing “stolen police car scenario.” The run lock system will cause the engine to shutoff in the event someone tries to move the car without first inserting the ignition key. Heavier duty suspension components are a common feature along with higher speed rated tires which help in sustaining a better degree of safety during high speed pursuits.

Just check the car out as you would any other, chances are you’ll find the car in great mechanical condition due the excellent maintenance it has received. Finding a great deal on a used police car can be a reality and you too can be cruising in style.

You are absolutely right about the condition and maintainance of these ex-police cruisers. However, lately they are getting much harder to find. The departments aren’t turning them in as frequently, budget cuts and all, subsequently the prices have gone up considerably – supply and demand. They are still a bargain, but not nearly as cheap or easy to find as they used to be.

Billy, good points. Used car prices have been going up lately and budget cuts are certainly in effect everywhere. It’s been quite awhile since I bought an ex-police car. I remember they used to be very plentiful at the Tampa Machinery Auction – lots of miles on them but very well maintained.

Be very careful with buying an older used car. Even though there are many good inexpensive second hand cars out there, they are not always easy to find. Furthermore, there are risks that you’ll be cheated or buy hidden problems. So take care, please and spend extra time to make sure you’re getting a car and a deal that you’ll be happy with.

Good insights. Several used car dealers on the internet offer customers fine quality products and services at a cost effective price which is why more used cars are sold. You really should be cautious and spend extra time to make sure you’re getting a car and a deal that you’ll be happy with.
